The first DF open held last Saturday at Fleetwood attracted competitors from Fleetwood, Keighley, Birkenhead, Llandudno, Port Dinnorwic, & Reidsmeere.
With the wind from the west a long course of approx 200 yds to the first mark was set, giving a beat, run & beat back to the finish by the weather mark. Add the 200 yd walk back to the start and each skipper walked approx ½ mile per race. With 16 races being completed call it 8 miles!! Like walking from the lake to Blackpool tower!
The wind grew steadily from 2 knots at 10am to about 12 knots by 2pm but the boats coped o.k. in their top rigs with just a few struggling to tack occasionally and nose diving downwind a bit. Some competitors, who had 2nd rig tried them but to no real advantage as they were slower downwind.
First start. Note the summer weather for June 20th!!!
At the end John Tushingham was the winner (no surprise there) but there were a some good results from boats which were not “optimised” and were still using the original Dragonforce sails.
We were kindly sponsored by the main suppliers to the class. Mike Weston & Martin Roberts donated a complete “B” rig, Tim Long a winch, and John Tushingham 3 complete sets of deck patches all of which went to very worthy recipients.
So, that was our first Dragon open meeting. If you missed it don’t worry like busses there’ll be another one along on Aug 22nd you can come to that!! SAVE THE DATE.
