Chris Harris, Fiona King, Anne Dennis, Min Edwards, Judith Baldwin and the Two Islands RYC start this report, as without them, we, the skippers would not have been able to enjoy a weekend of close, competitive and ultimately challenging racing at the Furzton Lakes venue in Milton Keynes. Thank You, all of you.
On both days the wind was a challenge, not too much to affect the event, but enough to cause a bit of head scratching for all, with some very big shifts and lulls on Saturday, most of which although consistent in their “flick” were random as to which side of the course would benefit and when, occasionally close to the bank was the favourite, other times “out to sea” was the best route, but overall, somewhere in the middle seemed to be the best option. As is now the normal in the IOM fleet, the results between front and back were very tight and with the revised 24 boat fleets and “6 up 6 down” promotion there was no hiding, with most experiencing promotion and demotion within the fleet. Some fell further than they expected, but the 6 up element allowed a few unexpected trips up the fleet as well. From this reporters view, the revised HMS seemed to work very well for the IOM fleet.
The weekend belonged to Rob Walsh and Brad Gibson who shared the honours on Saturday and Sunday, with the top ten positions being very tight behind them.
Darin Ballington being the best of the rest on Saturday and Graham Bantock taking 3rd on Sunday, special mention to our new recruit Colin Goodman who is showing that all that training in the dinghy world was not wasted!
As always it was great to see that the fleet is attracting new and returning skippers to the IOM Ranking Series and the class can only be the better for these new skippers, an entry of over 50 boats for each day yet again proving that there’s not much wrong with the MYA ranking process. Take a look at all the names and check again in 12 months, I bet that some of these will be much higher up the list….
Another big bonus of the venue were the spectators and visitors that saw what we do, the best promotion we can get!
Thanks again to the race team and see you all at the IOM Nationals at West Kirby in August.
