There has been some confusion about the application of new class rule F2.4(d) concerning ‘plate’ type gooseneck/kicking strap mast fittings, which has been approved at the recent IOM World Council AGM.
On first reading the wording of the rule itself, being split up into small bits doesn’t help the understanding. However Henry Farley reordered the words in a simple sentence which says the same thing in a more understandable way.
“If the bit that rotates is not circular and you can see it, then it must not exceed 20 mm in any cross section perpendicular to the axis of rotation.”
The question of ‘plate type’ mast kicking strap/gooseneck fittings was initiated in December last year when an MYA member wanted to add plates below the boom and behind the mast to contain complex adjustment mechanisms. The tech team queried this with IOMICA and Interpretation 2015-IOM-1 confirmed that these plates were not permitted fittings.
Unfortunately this also made many commercial fittings, which had been in existence for 10 years without comment, non-compliant. An emergency rule change proposed by Graham Bantock was approved by IRSA in September and this was confirmed by the voting at the recent IOMICA World Council AGM.
The rule change now PERMITS plate type gooseneck/kicking strap fittings, but restricts the width of the rotating part to 20 mm. The MYA tech team queried the status of the existing fittings with IOMICA at length and it is now clear that all fittings of this type need to be reduced in width to comply with the new rule.
There is some confusion about where the width measurement is taken and to clarify this, a diagram is shown on the attached photograph of one of these fittings for your information.
