If you are not aware of this new Radio Marblehead Championship, this year two Clubs, Leicestershire Radio Yacht Club (LRYC) and Manor Park Radio Sailing Club (MPRSC) which both have a few Marblehead owners, have come together to run a series of races so they can expand the fleet and use their thoroughbred racers.
The first event was held at LRYC’s Charnwood Water located on the edge of Loughborough. Seven skippers with their RM’s turned up to a site notorious for its variable and tricky wind conditions. True to form the lake provided just that. LRYC also allow IOM’s to sail on Marblehead days and a couple competed starting one minute before the RM’s. During the calmer races the IOM’s were more than a match for the RM’s.
LRYC also run quite a number of single day events and a season long series for both IOM’s and RM’s. Sunday saw three events in one. The single day’s race was for the Thornhill Trophy, The Dennis Nixon Series and the New MDMC.
Sunday’s races were also the last opportunity for the World Championship Skippers, Darin and Colin to fine tune their boats before Biblis in Germany 27th May-1st June.
Darin sailing his Grunge dominated the day, but the conditions even caught him out on a few occasions, letting a couple of local skippers take a few wins.
After lunch the wind conditions became so variable, so just after 2:15pm the consensus was that we should bring this inaugural event to a close after 12 races. Full results here. MDMC 2018 R1 Leicestershire results
Everyone agreed that the event was a success and were looking forward to the next round at Manor Park on the 10th June. The next Marblehead event at Loughborough will be on the 17th June.
