For obvious reasons this will be a very short report, and there is a more…
John Tushingham wins the 2019/20 ND IOM Winter Series, Craig Raistrick in 2nd and Derek Priestley in 3rd. NorthernDistrictWinterSeriesProvisionalResultsv2
20 skippers took part in the first Open at Blue Lagoon.
Conditions set an interesting challenge for the skippers from the outset. First pre race tests showed that the lulls were towards the top of No 1 rig, but the gusts were clearly No 2 and when racing started, there was a mix of rigs; some rigged for the lulls others for the gusts and this mix of rigs prevailed all day.
Race Officer, Brian Cheetham, set a course for the west south westerly wind and the 8 races sailed before lunch saw wins for John Tushingham, Derek Priestley and 2 wins each for Simon Robinson, Craig Rastrick and Roy Stephens, all sailing on No 1s. Although conditions were testing during the gusts and plenty ‘showed their rudders’, the lunchtime results showed that No 2 rigs were lagging behind. Unfortunately, Derek’s boat broke during the morning and he had to retire before lunch. At the break, John Tush was in the lead, having backed up his win with 4 second places.
Part way through the afternoon, the wind shifted through 90 degrees to the north for a while and a further 8 races were sailed over 4 different courses. Brian managed the course changes admirably and very little time was lost. At one stage, the wind strengthened quite considerably and several skippers changed down, but despite some extreme ‘moments’, No 1 rigs prevailed throughout the afternoon
John Tushingham pressed home his advantage taking a further 4 wins, with 2 wins for John Taylor, sailing his beautiful planked Rubix that was consistently quick throughout the day, another win for Craig, and a win for John Sharman.
The final result for the day was a clear win for John Tushingham on 27 points, John Taylor in 2nd on 32 points and Craig Rastrick 3rd on 47 points. Of the 20 boats that started Race 1, 16 made it through what was a very full and quite a tough day’s sailing.
That left the final standings for the Northern District Series as a win for John Tush with Craig Rastrick in 2nd place and Chris Moore in 3rd.
Thanks to the skippers who sailed in this, our first Open event at Blue Lagoon, to Brian Cheetham and the race team for a very full day’s racing that ran smoothly throughout and to Martin and Sharon of Blue Lagoon for excellent lunchtime catering, an endless stream of cuppas when they mattered most and for moving the partly sunken boat that’s used by the diving school which gave us excellent options for course setting.
Thanks go to all the skippers who took part in this, our first Open at our new home water, the race team led by Brian Cheetham and our new hosts, Martin and Sharon of Blue Lagoon who did sterling work supporting the event with endless cuppas at those critical moments and an excellent ‘soup and sandwich’ lunch.
