IOM trophy racing at Chelmsford - 5th January

Recommended Posts

Online entry is now open for The Oliver Lee Trophy for IOMs hosted by Chelmsford  RYC. Click Here

Chelmsford RYC is pleased to celebrate the life and career of renowned designer Oliver Lee with their annual open event for International One Metres.  This is a full day event on the first Sunday in January falling on the 5th in 2020.  The last few years have seen quite a keen fleet from across the district and further afield with the rock stars and veterans locking out the medal positions but with close scoring throughout the mid-fleet.  After a 9:45 briefing racing starts at 10am and will continue until mid afternoon when either daylight or wind fail us.  Once again we are grateful that George Beacroft has kindly agreed to act as PRO as he has many successful events under his belt.

Good luck to Colin but does anyone think they can end his winning streak?  Will a Kantun, AKA or Sedici triumph?

For anyone new to the club, we have parking next to the lake so rig changes can be done from the back of the car, but also a decent pavilion and  picnic area on the bank for tuning and tweaking.  This year the lake side is quite soft so good footwear is advised, but the lake is brim full so boats can be launched and retrieved easily.

One final bonus, we can probably help anyone looking to collect Sails-etc parts such as masts to save postage, get in touch so we can coordinate this.

Looking forward to seeing you there, and welcoming our old friends from Harwich, Coalhouse Fort, Cambridge, Southend and Eastbourne but keen to see some new faces as well.

Good luck to all entrants so far, but there is still time to enter and if you are prompt you can enter on the day.  Be prepared to supply emergency contact details if you have not provided them using the online entry.   Many thanks to our travellers from Eastbourne, Cambridge and Harwich.

So far there have been no sail number clashes so our stock of vinyl 1s looks safe but numbers are allocated on a first come first served basis.

The weather should start bright and crisp with a little low cloud, temperatures are about average, conditions are dry.   Wind direction looks good and stable with a predominately south-westerly  breeze which might edge a bit more southerly over the day, a sea breeze seems unlikely as the thermal gradient, and tidal coefficient are both extremely low.   Wind speed should be 7, 8, 9, or 10 knots which should benefit the sharp eyed and keep us in No. 1 rig the whole day.

Ground conditions remain a bit soft in places so good footwear is recommended.

There's been a few comments made, so the entry fee has been reduced to £6.  Everyone is welcome to come along to race, observe or just catch up with old friends, this is always a good natured day with plenty of help available to all.  Looking forward to seeing you there,

Toby, Chelmsford RYC racing and events team.
