The price designers pay.

Recommended Posts

For many years I have been designing my yachts through an old Maxsurf program dated between the early to mid 90s. Prior to this, I use to draw my designs on gridded paper whilst at sea on deployment. However, as time and technology has progressed from a drawing to a wooden plug, then from a computer  to laser cut sections and now 3D printed yachts, my concerns have increased to how I could  keep up with the software and technology within this cottage industry.

After 12 months of continuous research for the most economical design packages available, the software below seems to be the one that ticks all the boxes. When you look at the price for this software, hopefully all skippers will understand that designers are passionate about the yachts they create, whilst paying the price when keeping up with technology as it continually changes.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your message, I recently looked at Delftships and similar CAD software packages online, but I was put off when you read into the forums. All to often when you use free software, certain functions disappear or no longer work after time or usually after updates. An example, is usually the import and export file function.

Your right you can pay for additional features, but usually I would require more functions which more often do not come with the purchased program. For example, measuring the hulls waterline length when the hull is heeled at different angles.
