I heard yesterday of the passing of Keith Partington of the Ashton Quays RYC.
Keith came into our sport in the mid 1980’s and quickly became a great friend of one of our most famous Northern designers, Squire Kay. He built & raced several of Squires boats, usually tweaking the design a little to his own liking.
Keith was an engineer. He worked in the aerospace industry, specifically in the composites division, which is why he built such beautiful boats, in Carbon & Kevlar.
He particularly liked the 10r class & built a beautiful model to Squire’s “SKUA” design, which he raced both domestically & internationally and enjoyed modest success with.
He kindly loaned the boat to me to race at the Nationals at the Round Pond in the late 1990’s and I would have won, in fact I was the top 10r in 3rd place, but I was beaten by 2 Marbleheads!!
Keith was also very helpful to many sailors by spending some of his time & his knowledge of electronics repairing the old whirlwind winches, used by many of us, earning the nickname “The Winch Doctor”
He was also very interested in the technical side of our sport, serving for many years as the Northern District Senior Measurer.
So, thank you Keith for all your friendship & help that you gave to all those who knew you, and raced with you.
Sail in Peace.
