What a climax to the 2012 Marblehead GAMES series!
21 top-class entries including the U.K.’s two current World Champions and past winners were set to make it very difficult for Martin Crysell to take the Midgley Mug, the 2012 GAMES series winner’s trophy, because he had to win the MERMAID in order to do so.
However Marblehead World Champion, Brad Gibson, was unable to attend because of illness, leaving 19 boats to create a fantastic spectacle on Guildford’s Abbey Meads lake. 12 races were sailed in almost perfect conditions, with a light 0-5 mph SSW variable strength wind parallel to the control bank. The warm sunshine reflecting off the tall narrow sails was a magnificent sight, which was enjoyed by all including several visiting groups from the Southend and Frensham Pond clubs.
Martin was quite delighted to win the beautiful bronze MERMAID, which he had never won before, the Vic Cooney Trophy, for being the top veteran and the Improver’s prize for gaining 9 places since Race 3. CJ Vice was presented with the Junior prize, but in the spirit of Christmas everyone got a prize because the entry fee for this event was not financial but a wrapped present.
