Many of you will be aware of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation (ASSF). Based in Portland, and set up in memory of Olympic Gold medal winning sailor Andrew (Bart) Simpson, who was tragically killed in an Americas Cup training accident, ASSF is a very successful sailing charity, who through various programmes worldwide, encourage the participation in sailing and deliver it to those not always fortunate enough to be able to take part.
Every year in September the Foundation hold a fundraising event in the form of a yacht race known as “Bart’s Bash” This event is a global yacht race with boats of all types taking part at yacht clubs in many countries and thousands of pounds are donated/raised towards the foundation.
What you may not know is that my son, Shaun, is an employee of the foundation in their development dept. and came up with the idea that we, the MYA, should be invited to create a radio sailing section within “Bart’s Bash” to be called “The Biggest Little Boat Bash” and raise money for their “SailFit” programme. (Lots of us could benefit from that!!)
Further info will be forthcoming from the MYA Race Team and from the ASSF, but what you need to be aware of at this stage is that the event will take place over the weekend of 14/15th sept and you can use any boat you wish, as long as its radio controlled!
Further details to follow, but for now, SAVE THE DATE & TELL YOUR FRIENDS!!
Note: For any of our overseas friends this is a global event so you will be able to organise an event at your local club and help raise the awareness of our great sport and contribute towards an excellent charity.
