As is tradition in the class, the fleet mustered on the Wednesday morning of the championship for the YM Cup. This event is sailed as a separate ‘round robin’ competition within the week’s sailing, leading to quarter and semi-finals and then to a tense final involving best-of-three boards between the two top boats. In the round robin, the eight top scorers going through to the finals were Shaun and Graham Wyeth, Jacque Cook and Eric Meighen, Peter Fothergill and Andy Fernie, Malcolm Eales and Paul Edwards, David Bell and Margaret Bell, Derek Priestley and John Brooks, Dave Geldard and C.J.Vice, and Nigel Sharp. Meanwhile the breeze was building, and although at the end of the morning boards there had been a good whole-sail breeze, by the time the finalists came to the water, skinny’s or No 2’s were indicated for the lighter boats.
In the quarter-final, Shaun took six points from Jacque to go through. Similarly, Malcolm knocked Peter out, Derek Priestley beat David Bell after a succession of re-sails, and Dave Geldard knocked out Nigel Sharp. With the wind continuing to increase, the identical mid-weight boats of Shaun and Malcolm had to resort to a spinnaker run to see Shaun go through, and Derek and Dave also needed a run to see Derek go through. In the final, Derek Priestley and John Brook’s VC2 beat Shaun’s Hollom design on both beats, to win the Yachting Monthly Cup. An exciting and gruelling day’s racing for the finalists, who can now look forward to another windy day on Thursday for the penultimate championship day.
