Yet again West Kirby lived up to the billing, with 64 skippers presenting themselves to the race team for registration. Set up and practice was disrupted by heavy rain and strong winds but by the start at 10.am the rain has stopped and only the strong breeze remained. This top of C rig breeze was to stay for the morning with the unfortunate consequence that there were a number of retirements during the seeding races.
As can be expected at a GBR ranking event the racing was tight with some tough but fair racing and with only 1 protest the race team led by Chris Harris kept the racing going at a good pace, managing to complete 24 heats giving 6 completed races.
Although the racing was close and the final positions were tight, there was one stand out skipper who tamed the course and conditions; sailing his new boat for the 1st time in anger, and preparing to fight to retain his title, current IOM World Champion Rob Walsh showed his talent with a comprehensive victory. 8pts from 6 races! Well Done Rob.
The rest of the top ten was tight with only 19pts separating 2nd and 10th, with Darin Ballington, beating Ian Dundas by 1pt for 2nd and Brad Gibson a further point back in 4th.
After racing the skippers all retired to the West Kirby SC for food, drink and prize giving.
Sunday is forecast to be more of the same!!!
results to be posted next.
