Traditionally Wednesday sees the staging of the race for the Yachting Monthly Cup during the “A” Week and this year’s event was today.
Competitors were glad to see a respite from the 30mph winds of the previous day. The wind was light from the south west giving reaching conditions throughout the day. As anyone who has sailed at Fleetwood before will know that and breeze blowing over the hotels creates difficult conditions at the top end and so it proved to be.
The race for the cup is centred on a knock out basis in its latter stages, racing comprising of each pair of boats sailing two beats to windward and in the event of a tie sailing the run to decide who progresses.
Sailing was keen throughout the day with special mention going to Eddie Greenwood of the Fleetwood Club, now 78 years of age, knocking out Chris Harris in the quarter finals before falling to Derek Priestley in the semi finals.
The semi finals saw the two Fleetwood boats sail each and two Gosport boats sail each with Shaun Wyeth getting the better of Peter another Gill over the two beats.
The final was keenly contested with Derek ably assisted by Robert Walsh (snr) taking both beats to windward to emerge as the Champion.
Thanks to David Rose for the prompt report, pictures to follow.
We hope to post the current standings for the National Championships later.
